Kyra McCarthy began playing the violin at age seven with violinist Rebeca Rose at the East Bay Waldorf School in Berkeley, California. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from the University of Oregon studying with Dr. Leslie Straka. While at the University of Oregon, Ms. McCarthy studied an overview of Suzuki Violin Books 1-4 with Shelley Rich. She has studied with teachers: Don Ehrlich, Vladimir Khalikulov, Sharon Wood, Kathy Marshall and Ann Kadarauch. Ms. McCarthy has studied with Suzuki pedagogy teachers Susan Kempter, Shelley Rich, Louise Scott and Judy Bossuat.
Ms. McCarthy began teaching in 1998 as an adjunct professor with the University of Oregon Community Music Institute Suzuki Strings Program where she instructed private and group Suzuki violin and viola lessons for four years. In 2002 she relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where Ms. McCarthy taught Suzuki violin for two years in a public school that had implemented a “Suzuki in the Schools” program for their second and third grade classes. She was also an active member with the Valley of the Sun Suzuki Association, teaching both private and group lessons. Since moving to Austin, Texas in 2005 Ms. McCarthy has taught private violin and viola lessons with the Austin Lyric Opera Armstrong Community Music School and with the Austin International School. Currently she teaches at her home studio as well as at Blackerby Violin Shop. Many of Ms. McCarthy’s students have placed well and received high marks in local and state competitions.
